what worship workshops is About..
01
Equip
Worship Workshops seeks to equip those who feel called into worship ministry with the practical musical and leadership tools necessary for an excellent music ministry.
02
Empower
Our goal is not to "fix" churches or worship teams but rather to come alongside and empower the gifts that already reside in the congregations. We do so through both spiritual and practical teaching sessions based on Scripture and experience.
03
Encounter
Worship Workshops has a heavy emphasis on the presence of God - it is the most important aspect of the whole workshop. Worship times are always part of the workshop, and offers a chance for your worship team to be refreshed and ministered to off the stage.
Worship Workshops is a unique, hands-on day of training for worship teams, musicians and anyone interested in music. The program was started and is taught by worship leader and multi-instrumentalist, Jonathan Smith. The workshop is targeted towards churches with volunteer-based worship teams, and seeks to put tools in their hands that will help them succeed musically and spiritually. This is done through informative and insightful teaching based on years of experience and Biblical inspiration. The workshop is a hands-on experience with plenty of opportunity to engage with the sessions through playing instruments, songwriting and more.

The workshop will both start and end with times of worship – it is the most important part of the workshop! Oftentimes, the people on stage rarely have the opportunity to worship in the pews with others. This offers a time for those in your music ministry to simply worship and be refreshed in the presence of God.
King David is one of the clearest Biblical examples of the how God anoints people for musical worship and leadership. This session pulls from the Biblical text to lay a foundation for the modern worship ministry. We will answer why
How do I learn to play by ear? What should I have in my monitor mix? How do I tell the difference between 4/4 and 6/8 time signature? – You would be surprised by how many questions people need answered. This session helps answer some of those questions and provides both musician and vocalist with an understanding of the musical basics, and gives them the tools needed to grow and improve musically. From the beginner to the veteran, I can assure that everyone will gain something from this session!
This session covers many of the practical aspects of leading your congregation on Sunday morning. From planning a set list to giving an exhortation between songs, this session helps guide worship leaders in many of the small, but important factors in connecting with a congregation.
I believe that the Holy Spirit is the best worship leader. It is important that we lead with the help and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Many people can lead a song, but God wants to raise up leaders who are in tune with what the Holy Spirit is specifically doing during a worship service – sometimes it comes in the form of that “nudge” to repeat a chorus, or a spontaneous exhortation in between songs. I will give practical advice right from scripture on how to listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying and then take action in a way that is beneficial to your team and congregation.
In this session we will provide practical training for each member of the band. Some church musicians may have an understanding of how to play their own instrument but do not understand how their instrument interacts with the other instruments in the band. We will teach how each musician can play in a way that best serves the rest of the band and the congregation. This teaching will serve people of various skill levels – you don’t actually have to be a professional to sound good as a group on Sunday morning!
I will give a demonstration on some of the instruments myself, and when possible, will have another person to help demonstrate. At the end of this session, each musician will have a better understanding of how they can use their skills to play in a modern context that serves the song well. I have found that vocalists enjoy this session just as much as the musicians!
Songwriting is often a gift that has to be uncovered – you might be surprised at how many songwriters are in your congregation! Many songwriters write in secret, for personal use, and are often afraid to share it with anyone. This session is a great way to uncover the songwriting gifts in those in your church.
Your team will learn songwriting techniques that can be universally applied to any genre. These principles will also be applied to writing worship songs for your church. Your team will learn how to write congregational songs that are spiritually impactful and useful for Sunday morning. This session will be a hands-on approach, where we will even have the opportunity to start a song together.
This is an optional session in which I will personally work with your band and vocal team in a live rehearsal. We will rehearse two or three contemporary worship songs with everyone on their instruments/microphones. I will provide practical instruction as we learn the songs together, applying concepts from the previous sessions.
The goal in this session is never perfection, it is simply to incorporate the practical techniques we learned throughout the day. My goal is to help unlock the hidden potential in your team and encourage them in their gifts!
